With this report SEGES Innovation hope to contribute to the national and international discussion concerning ecosystem functionality and water management in Danish coastal waters in the last decades, in the period with the Water Frame Directive (WFD) and for the future with the purpose to achieve good ecological status in the Danish coastal waters.
The water environment in Danish coastal waters have since the 1980s been high on the political agenda.
With the implementation of the Water Frame Directive a new paradigm for water management was introduced. Instead of focusing on nitrate leaving the rootzone the focus now was on biological quality elements in the water bodies. This introduces potentially more complexity in the water management including ecosystem functionality in the coastal waters, multi press factors, nutrient loss and transport from the catchment as well as a more diverse use of different measures to reduce N and P to coastal waters.
